Travelling within the UK
Booking trains: We recommend you travel via train in the UK. Tickets can be booked via TheTrainLine.com, though you may find cheaper fares through the individual operators: Virgin Trains, CrossCountry and First TransPennine. Discount cards are available for ages 16-25 and 60+. These cost about £26 and entitle the holder to a 33% reduction on most tickets. They are probably only useful to visitors travelling via London or extending their stay. Restrictions apply.
Finding the cheapest ticket: British train fares are complicated. In simple terms, the earlier you book your tickets, the cheaper they are, but the more restricted you are on which train you can take. Check this carefully when you book, in case of delayed flights. Travel after 9:00-10:00 am is usually cheaper. If this isn't complicated enough, two single tickets may be cheaper than a return ticket. Also, if a journey needs two trains, it may be cheaper to book it as two separate tickets.
Travel by bus: For travellers on a budget, there is cheap bus travel within the UK, but it is considerably harder to get to Windermere by bus. The adventurous may wish to look at the following sites: Megabus and National Express. Megabus travels to Oxenholme, National Express to Kendal. The bus takes 5-6 hours from Manchester and costs about £28, but you can travel from other airports.
Recommended connections to Windermere
Manchester Airport
There is a direct train line from Manchester Airport to Windermere, though you may have to change trains once or twice. A standard fare is £35.80, advance fares are available from £18. The journey takes approximately 2 hours. Book tickets via one of the above sites.Edinburgh Airport
From the airport, you can:- Take the Lothian Buses airport bus to the city centre, alight at either Haymarket or Waverley station. Cost £6 return, takes about 35 minutes.
- Take a taxi. It will cost about £25, but may be more at night. It will take you about 20-25 minutes to Haymarket station.
- Be adventerous: the short of cash may try the number 35 bus (£1.20 each way, takes 1 hour), alight on the Royal Mile, 5 minutes' walk from the station. Edinburgh is an excellent place to extend your holiday.
From Edinburgh, the train takes about 3 hours. Standard return fare is £48.50, advance fares are available from £19. You will need to change trains at Oxenholme. Book tickets via one of the above sites.
Liverpool Airport
There is no direct rail link to Liverpool Airport. The easiest way to get to Windermere is to:
- Take the Arriva Bus 500 from stand 3 to Liverpool (Skelhorn St., outside Lime Street station). Probably costs about £2, takes 35 minutes.
- Take a train to Wigan North Western. Standard fare is £5.40 each way, no advance purchase reductions, takes 30-50 minutes.
- Take a train to Windermere. You will have to change at Oxenholme. Standard return fare is £26.80, advance fares are available from £14. Book tickets via one of the above sites.
Journey times can be planned via the Traveline website: enter "Liverpool John Lennon Airport" to "Wigan North Western". Buses/trains leave every 20 minutes at peak times.
Birmingham Airport
A rail link exists from Birmingham International Airport to Windermere, but it is not direct. You may have to change at Birmingham New Street and/or Oxenholme. Standard return fare is £67, advance fares may be considerably cheaper if you book three separate tickets (airport to Birmingham, Birmingham to Oxenholme, Oxenholme to Windermere). The journey should take 3 to 3.5 hours at most times of the day. Book tickets via one of the above sites.
London airports
We do not recommend travelling via London if you can help it. If you do so, you will need to:
- Take a train from the airport to a central London station:
- Heathrow: an underground link exists to Green Park - costs £4.50 and takes 45 minutes.
- Gatwick: costs £17 and takes 30 minutes.
- Stansted: costs £28.70 return, takes 45 minutes.
- Luton: costs £20.40 return, takes 25-40 minutes.
- Take an underground link from this station to London Euston. Costs £4, allow at least 1 hour.
- Take a train from London Euston to Windermere. This costs £83 return (a few advance tickets are available for £74) and takes about 4 hours, changing trains at Lancaster.
Flying to the UK
We recommend you fly to Manchester Airport if practical. Most major airlines will fly into this airport and it has a direct rail link to the closest train station to the conference, Windermere.
Cheaper flights may be found to the airports at Edinburgh, Liverpool or Birmingham airports using EasyJet or Ryanair. You can easily get to the conference venue from all of these airports. Other alternatives include: Glasgow (Prestwick), Newcastle and Nottingham airports, but these require further connections.
Flights into London (Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton, Stansted, City) are best avoided due to the cost of the train fares from London to the conference venue, and the time taken to get there. If you fly via London, avoid connections that involve changing airports, as it can take several hours to get between them.
Click here to see airlines that fly into these airports: Manchester, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Birmingham.
