Celebrating the Work of Prof Richard Davis OBE
On 28th July, Jodrell Bank hosted a workshop celebrating the life and work of Professor Richard Davis OBE.
Dr Richard Porcas of the Max-Planck-Institut für Radioastronomie in Bonn, started the afternoon off with a lively trip through his time working with Richard at Jodrell Bank whilst studying for their MSc, PhD and their early research careers.
Professor Ralph Spencer then took over to talk through Richard's ‘Star Years’ followed by Professor Simon Garrington detailing Richard’s extensive contributions to the development of Jodrell telescopes.
Dr Althea Wilkinson then told us about Richard’s involvement in the Planck Front End Modules including his and Dr Rod Davies’ design alterations of the Low Noise Amplifiers and Richard’s promotion to team leader on Rod’s retirement.
Professor Clive Dickinson ended the session with a tour of Richard’s recent scientific research and achievements, both on new paths and building on data gathered by Planck.
We were honoured to be joined by members of Richard’s family and it is a testament to his influence and popularity that we welcomed guests from Universities across England and Europe.
As well as showcasing Richard’s scientific achievements, the talks also praised his dedication, friendliness and sense of fun. There were lots of photos of him at work and play, and he is almost invariably smiling.
Thank you to all who came and contributed to this event celebrating the life and work of a valued and much-loved member of the Jodrell Bank community.
