I am orginally from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. I studied Mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge obtaining 1st Class Honours in 1991 and finished my PhD in 1995. I worked under the supervision of Paul Shellard in the Relativity Group in DAMTP and my thesis title was "String radiation, interactions and constraints." I was elected a research fellow of Trinity in 1995 and was also awarded a PPARC postdoctoral fellowship. As a postdoc I spent the 2 years at Imperial College in the theoretical physics group and 4 years back in DAMTP. In 1999 I was awarded a PPARC advanced research fellowship. In September 2001 I moved to the University of Manchester where I have been ever since. I am a member of the Astrophysics group within the School of Physics and Astronomy. Between 2001 and 2007 I was based at Jodrell Bank Observatory, and I am now part of the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics in the newly built Turing Building.
